Sewing machine basics

with Fabrications

Barley Massey's 'Introduction to using a sewing machine' is one of the most popular courses she runs from Fabrications in East London and Yodomo brings her teaching online for the first time.

It's designed for those who have little or no experience of using a sewing machine. You'll learn basic sewing machine skills and develop the confidence to progress onto making a tote-style bag.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

  • Thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin
  • Feed fabric through, sew in a straight line and turn corners
  • Explore the range of features and stitches on the machine
  • Sew different types of seams
  • Understand how to hem the edge of the cloth
  • Apply a pocket and patches

    Barley Massey

Barley set up Fabrications in 2000 on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. Her focus has been on reviving traditional textile techniques, making, eco design, upcycling, care & repair with a modern and fun approach through my shop, studio, workshops and events. A few of her initiatives include ‘Remember Me’ (a personal service in which she transformed clothes that hold memories and sentimental value into comforting items) ‘Rethink Rubbish’ (a series of craft kits to encourage the aspiring upcyclist) and ‘The Upcycling Academy’ (an educational model aiming to provide thought provoking, hands on learning into textile waste, creative upcycling and better fashion industry practises)

    About this School

Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.

Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 20 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.

Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
