I am Jane George and in July 2020 my husband Anthony and I lost our 19-year-old son Llŷr to mental health. In order to cope with my grief, I started knitting. I began making small things and giving them to anyone who came to the house. Anthony suggested we sell some to raise money for mental health charities. We were quickly overwhelmed and had to stop taking orders. Our son Alex asked for help on his Instagram account and before long the whole world was knitting and knitformentalhealth was created.
Our purpose is to raise as much money as possible for mental health charities by making and selling products, handmade with love by volunteers from all across the country. Wherever possible, we use yarn donated to us. At the same time, we want to improve the mental health of both our creative volunteers and our customers by sharing the ‘2 wolves story’ and creating an inclusive community where creativeness is encouraged and every voice is heard.
This Doctor Alex model is made by Alice Heron a young and very talented young lady. It takes her 4 days to make each one. His mop of lockdown hair takes the longest, as long as it takes to do everything else.
Please be aware that the Dr Alex doll is not a toy and is not suitable for children under the age of 14.
'I'm a recent graduate of a Fashion Textiles and Design Degree in June 2020, just at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak. The pandemic has been difficult for everyone, but for a young person just coming out of education it was particularly hard as it meant there would be little opportunities in the field I wanted to go into. For almost 10 years I have used Knitting and Crochet as a hobby and after seeing Alex's post on Instagram about what his Mum was doing, I knew I just had to get involved and put my skills to good use as well as supporting my own mental well being. As a gift I made a Dr Alex doll and was blown away by the response. I have since also made Captain Tom dolls.' Alice Heron @alice4599
