Sashiko & Boro Mending Class
With Barley Massey
Sashiko, meaning ‘little stab’ is the Japanese art of stitching beautiful patterns using running stitch. Often used to add strength, texture and warmth to old garments. Boro (more accurately ‘Boro boro’), meaning ‘rags or tatters’ is the art of repairing fabric using scraps and stitching. Boro work follows the British wartime tradition of ‘make do and mend’ but was used out of necessity in Japan to prolong the life of clothes and bedding due to extreme poverty and the scarcity of textiles.
Bring along an item of clothing or soft furnishing for repair or embellishment. Denim, cotton or linen wear are recommended. There will be a selection of additional fabrics and threads for using in your patching and stitch work. All levels of sewer welcome, Barley will guide you through the Sashiko sewing technique whilst offering additional tips and inspiration on ways to mend and uplift your item (and other pieces you may have at home).
