Textile Reuse Hub Impact Report published
In May 2023, Yodomo took over an empty space in Hackney Wick with the challenge of creating a ‘demonstrator’ project for circularity in action.
Today we’re able to share the results of that two year residency, demonstrating what happens when space is leveraged (with thanks to Hackney Wick CDT, The Trampery, Peabody), when local authorities and local waste authorities support (Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets) and capital funding can support with machinery (Mayor of London), when brands get on board (Vivienne Westwood, John Lewis, Nike to name a few), when academic and educational institutions collaborative and when local people and volunteers get involved.
It also demonstrates the power of creative hubs connecting the project to the Creative Wick team and within the HWFI Creative Enterprise Zone. From 2023 - 2026 the Hub has shown what’s possible when community, creativity and circularity come together.
Highlights include:
- Diverting 13+ tonnes of textiles from landfill/incineration
- Partnering with 50+ businesses to reuse surplus materials
- Engaging 4,944 workshop bookings across 57 events
- Providing 1,100+ people with affordable reclaimed materials
- Supporting 15 young creatives through the Sustainable Young Makers Programme
- Building a network of 160+ volunteers
- Welcoming universities, local authorities and international delegations from Finland, Australia and South Africa to learn from the Hub
Beyond the stats, the Hub gave people access to possibility: unique materials, skills, and a community that empowered makers, inspired careers, and embedded sustainability into practice.
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed their time, energy and creativity to this work. With your support, we’ve demonstrated that with the right space and partnerships, behaviour change is not only possible – it’s already happening.
