The Tower Hamlets Textile Reuse and Recycling Map

Yodomo is excited to announce the launch of a new learning and behavioural change project in partnership with Hackney Wick and Fish Island Community Development Trust, funded by the Carbon Reduction Community Grants Programme from the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

This initiative will create a comprehensive map highlighting existing and emerging textile waste initiatives within Tower Hamlets, aiming to reduce textile waste and promote sustainable practices.

Textile waste is the second largest contributor to global pollution, yet many residents and businesses in Tower Hamlets need more guidance on the range of sustainable options available for their unwanted textiles. The project aims to bridge this gap by mapping out the many exciting initiatives happening in Tower Hamlets and help local residents and businesses to uncover sustainable options for their textile waste and help them benefit from the many high-quality materials available at low cost due to them being industry ‘waste’.

The map will feature a range of resources, including reuse centers, scrap stores, recycling centers, mending workshops, maker groups, swap shops, shredders, pre-loved shops, and repair cafes. This will help the community understand the differences between textile reuse and recycling, and easily locate local options.

In addition to reducing textile waste and emissions, the project will empower residents to take active roles in combating climate change through coordinated local action.

If you are involved with a business or an initiative operating in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets that is working to reduce textile waste or keep textiles longer in reuse, then please complete this short form. It should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. Your contribution is vital in helping us build a resource that benefits the entire community.

The many initiatives will be collated before designing the online and print map which will launch in September 2024.
