Meet the Yodomo Makers

Sian McLachlan, founder of Shoorah Shoorah

Sian McLachlan is a jewellery designer and founder of Shoorah Shoorah who creates bright and bold designs from rope and cord. She uses functional knots in bold colours and repetitive forms to create pieces that raise a smile and make a statement.

What one piece of advice would you give to new designers?

“I always remind myself that done is better than perfect. When I'm creating my designs and promoting my brand, I find I can tie myself in knots, hoping I will reach a point where I am 100% satisfied. But this wastes valuable time and opportunities you can be sharing, sitting with your designs, getting feedback and refining your work. And it gets you out of your head and back into the world!”

Julia Clarke, artist and educator

Julia Clarke creates sculptures for indoor and outdoor spaces. She works with willow, both dried and living, with wire, steel, paper, and ceramic. Natural materials and environmental concerns are an important element of her work and the rhythm of weaving and using tactile materials is important to her process.

What one piece of advice would you give to new designers?

Just keep making... to the point that you exhaust an idea. Even things that don’t work so well at first will provide inspiration later.

Tabara N'Diaye, co-founder of La Basketry

Tabara N'Diaye is a basket weaver and co-founder of La Basketry, a homeware brand which specialises in baskets designed in collaboration with a group of female artisans in her native Senegal. She is on a mission to bring attention to some of the world's most ancient crafts with basketry techniques and modern creations that will inspire and delight.
